strength training moves
Can you just do strength training and see results?

I live on a busy street, no sidewalks, 2 kids…excuses excuses. It’s hard for me to get in cardio, I have hand weights at home and love to strength train. If I move quickly in between sets to get my heart rate up, can I still get the benefits of doing cardio+strength training? or do I HAVE to walk/run, etc. to make it work it? I feel in the “all or nothing” mindset, and I am not lifting weights because there may be no sense if I’m not doing cardio. But I’m sure something is better than nothing… right?

something is better than nothing, and contrary to what a lot of people think, weight lifting is better than cardio when it comes to fat loss. while cardio burns more calories while you do it, you burn more calories after a lifting workout. this is because your body is repairing the muscle damage. in addition, more lean muscle means you’re going to be burning more calories throughout the day just fueling that muscle. before you think it, NO you won’t get “bulky” either. that doesn’t happen unless you dedicate yourself to a high calorie diet. bodybuilders eat nearly 10,000 calories a day to maintain their size. even with that said, you should still do cardio for your heart rate. this is what i’d suggest. start by warming up doing some jumping jacks (or buy a jump rope). really any kind of moving around will work. you can dance or chase your children or pets. after that, do the following exercises in order, one after another so you build it into a circuit:

body squats, push-ups, bent over rows, and good mornings.

after that, rest about 90 seconds, then do another circuit. rest, repeat one more time.

this way, you keep your heart rate up while still building muscle.

see exrx.net for instructions on these exercises.
