I am doing more cardio and weight training, why did I gain 5 lbs?

My clothing size is the same and I am not eating more. I know muscle weighs more than fat, but I was not a skinny person to begin with, so the extra weight scares me. Is there anything I can do to lose weight? I am female, 41 years old, strength/weight train 2x week and 40 minutes cardio at least 5 days a week.

The most important thing to keep in mind when exercising is that muscle weighs more than fat. So although you may be losing body fat, you gain muscle especially since you are doing weight training and this will cause you to gain weight before you lose it.

To have a better idea if/where you are losing you can take measurements of your body’s width. For example, measure your waist, hips, thighs, neck, and/or bust. This may help you see body fat loss even when the scale shows a gain from muscle mass.
